Smoothies are a great way to start the day and a great addition to your morning routine. They can be full of healthy foods to get your day off to the right start.

They are super easy to make and so versatile. Whether you prefer fresh fruit, peanut butter, leafy greens, beets, or even rhubarb. There really are no limits to what you can put in your smoothie.

Just by using your favorite fruit, milk, and protein powder you can have a complete meal on the go.

One thing I always thought when I first started making smoothies was that I needed yogurt to make a good one. That is definitely not true.

Yogurt can be substituted for so many different things and if making a banana smoothie, it really doesn't need much else to make a delicious smoothie.

I make smoothies daily and very rarely do I feel the need to use yogurt. You can get the same creamy texture and plenty of flavor without it.

How to make a creamy smoothie without yogurt?

Here are my top 8 tips for a delicious smoothie.

    1. Start with a good blender: Some blenders just chop ingredients up into small pieces instead of both chopping and creaming them together. That's why I love my Blendtec. The blades are designed to cream everything together and make it more cohesive. A good blender will make all the difference.
    2. Frozen Berries or Fruit: Frozen fruit is a great way to thicken a smoothie. Ice cubes can water it down so instead of ice, use fruit to give it a thicker consistency.
    3. Peanut butter (or almond butter): A scoop of peanut butter is a great way to help make a smoothie nice and creamy.
    4. Protein Powder: I prefer to use a vanilla flavored protein.
    5. Ripe Bananas: Using a banana that has gotten too soft with lots of brown spots may result into a more watered down consistency.
    6. Frozen Banana: If just a plain banana isn't quite doing the trick. Take banana slices and freeze them the night before.
    7. Frozen Milk: Ice cubes do work great but they can water the smoothie down a bit. One option is to freeze the milk of your choice in an ice cube tray and use a couple of those in your morning smoothie. You will still need a liquid component but just adding a couple of frozen milk cubes could make all the difference.
    8. Chia Seeds

These are just a few ways you can make your homemade smoothies with a creamier texture. Have you tried any of these? Leave a comment below if something worked well for you.

Note: If adding spinach, it can be helpful to add that first. The weight of the bananas and strawberries will help them blend better.

Frozen Blueberries: This recipe also makes a delicious blueberry banana smoothie. Just substitute the frozen strawberries for frozen blueberries. Learn how to freeze fresh blueberries.

    Substitutions

Fresh Fruit: Fresh fruit can also be used in this strawberry banana smoothie recipe. If it is not frozen add a cup of ice cubes or some frozen milk cubes.

Milk: You can really use any milk you prefer. Coconut, soy, almond, or dairy milk. Coconut water can also be used.

What do you do with a leftover smoothie?

A leftover smoothie can be stored in the refrigerator for the rest of the day. It will start to lose its texture and consistency as the day goes on but will still taste great.

One of my favorite things to do with leftover smoothies is to freeze them in popsicle molds for a snack later. My kids won't drink very many smoothies but they will eat popsicles made from all of my smoothies.

It can also be frozen in a mason jar with the lid on. Just make sure there is an inch of space to allow for it to expand.
