This blueberry simple syrup is so easy to make! It's a combination of water, sugar, and fresh blueberries that can be used in various ways such as cocktails, mocktails, and desserts.

One of my favorite parts of summer is growing homegrown blueberries. They are easy to grow and give us fresh berries all summer long.
This recipe is straight from my garden. We make this simple syrup to flavor things like lemonade, italian sodas and other summer cocktails.
It's really easy to make and will keep in the refrigerator for about a month.

Ingredients
Simple syrup is made with a 1:1 ratio of water and sugar. Then, add in the fresh fruit to infuse it with more flavor.
Blueberries: Fresh or frozen blueberries can be used to make this syrup. We like to use the berries from our blueberry garden.
Lemon Juice: Adding a little bit of fresh lemon juice helps balance out some of the sweetness.

How to Make
In a small pot on the stove, add the water and sugar, then warm over medium heat. Stir to help dissolve the sugar.
Add in the blueberries and give a good mix.
Bring to a boil and reduce down to a simmer.
Simmer on the stove for about 20 minutes or until the berries are broken down and the liquid has reduced down.
It should be a slightly thicker consistency. Thicker than water but not quite as thick as maple syrup.
Add in the fresh lemon juice.
Remove from stove and allow to slightly cool.
Take a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and strain the juices out.
Gently move the berries around so all the liquid gets through.
Do not toss the berries! Add them to a fresh lemonade or on top of pancakes.
Storage
Store the syrup in a glass bottle or jar and keep in the refrigerator for up to a month.
Simple syrup can also be frozen. Freeze in ice cube trays and keep in a freezer safe container.
Equipment
- Small pot: I like to use a 1.5 to 2 quart size pot to make simple syrups.
- Fine mesh strainer: to catch the berries when done cooking.
- Glass bottle: to store the syrup in the refrigerator. This is also a great way to serve it.
