    Why you will love this

    • Easy to make
    • Uses real chives
    • Full of fresh flavor
    • Real ingredients
    • Easy to spread
    • Perfect for bagels or a slice of bread

    Ingredients

Cream Cheese, fresh chives, milk, onion powder and sat.

Chives: This recipe calls for fresh chives. And if they come from the garden, even better! Diced-up green onions can also be used in a pinch.

Milk: The small amount of milk is just enough to make this cream cheese easily spreadable. Even after it's chilled, it's still really easy to spread. The milk can be substituted for sour cream, greek yogurt, or heavy cream.

Onion Powder: I choose to use a small amount of onion powder in this recipe instead of real onion. Since the chives already have a strong onion flavor I just felt diced onions weren't necessary. Onion powder works great!

Regular Cream Cheese: This recipe calls for the full-fat version. While low fat can be substituted, it will change the consistency, but still taste great.

    How to Make

Allow the cream cheese to come to room temperature. About 30 minutes.

Place the cream cheese in a medium bowl and mix with a hand mixer until it is soft. Add in the milk and continue whipping until it is light and airy.

Glass bowl with whipped cream cheese.
A glass bowl with whipped cream cheese with chives.

Add in the diced chives, onion powder and salt. Continue mixing until fully incorporated.

If time allows, chill for 2 hours before using. The longer this sits in the fridge, the better it is going to get!

A jar with whipped cream cheese and chives.

    Storage

This cream cheese spread will last about one week or in the refrigerator when stored in an airtight container. A mason or weck jar works perfectly.

Can it be frozen? No. This cream cheese spread will not freeze well. It is best used up within a week.

    Ways to Serve

A bagel with a cream cheese spread with other bagels and a jar of cream cheese.
    • Spread on a morning bagel or toast
    • Use as a veggie dip
    • Add to a baked potato

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is cream cheese and cream cheese spread the same?

Cream cheese spreads are the same as cream cheese but often have some kind of add-ins like herbs, garlic and other flavors. It also has a softer consistency so it can easily be spread.

Can you freeze cream cheese spread?

While it can be frozen safely, it is not a great idea. Dairy can separate or the consistency can change once frozen. It is best used within a week.

      5 stars
I live in an assisted living facility, so I do not have a microwave in my room or any way to cook. I am all about making cream cheese spreads, or flavored Butters for toast, (to take to the dining room with me) I can order grocery items to be delivered and make some of my own snacks in my small aportment and keep in my small refrigerator. That being said, I have made a smoked salmon whipped cream cheese spread for my Bagels that is pretty darn good! I love green onion/Chive cream cheese but it is so pricey in the store. When I make it, I share. Can't wait to try this, and I want to check your other recipes or anything that I can use. Thanks so much for the ideas!

Can't wait to try this. Question, the ingredient labeled said garlic powder. Onion powder is mentioned in the write up. The ingredient list doesn't mention either or am amount.

      I'm missing something.

Hi Ernest, No you are not missing anything I miss labeled the photo. It should be onion powder. The amount needed is reflected in the recipe card. Hope you enjoy it!
